LADEE Laser Communication Test Sets Space Data Transmission Record

NASA announced that the Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration (LLCD) carried by the LADEE on the lunar probe uses laser beams to transmit data between the Moon and the Earth, setting a record of 622Mbps data downloads. LLCD is NASA's first-generation two-way communication system that uses laser instead of radio waves. It also demonstrates a data upload rate of 20 Mbps (uploaded from earth ground station to a detector on the moon's orbit).

NASA's previously used RF communication system has limited data transmission capacity. The new laser communication system will expand NASA's communication capabilities. It will be capable of transmitting high-resolution images and 3D video from deep space.
