The mini invisible cloak is only 30 microns in diameter.
These "invisibility cloaks" were developed by researchers from Towson University and the University of Maryland. They published the results of the above research at the New Journal of Physics of the German Institute of Physics and Physics, published on May 25.
Although this "invisibility cloak" can not be like the well-known Harry Potter's invisibility cloak, so that each object disappears, but they can be used to slow down or even stop the light, creating a so-called "captured rainbow" ( Trapped rainbow) phenomenon.
"Captured rainbows" can be used on miniature biosensors to inspect biomaterials by the amount of light they absorb and emit, the fluorescence spectrum. Compared with the normal speed of light, the slower interaction between light and molecules is stronger. Therefore, more research is needed in this area.
Dr Vera Smolyaninova is the first author of the research results. She said that one of the benefits of the biochip family is that the person who owns it has a large number of small sensors. This means that the owner can demonstrate many tests immediately. For example, only one person's DNA is needed, and the owner can test a large number of genetic environments.
In this sequence, light stagnates at the boundary between each "invisibility cloak," meaning that the human eye observes a "captured rainbow" at the boundary of the "invisibility cloak."
The 25,000 "invisible cloaks" are evenly displayed on gold foil, each with a micro-lens to bend the surrounding light, effectively forming an invisible area in the middle. As light passes through the gap between each "invisibility cloak", light of different lengths and colors stagnates in a narrower space, forming a "rainbow".
The "Invisible Cloak" is arranged in a commercially available array of microscope heads. This microscope head array contains all the individual microlenses and the outer layer is coated with a gold film. Then, the microscope head array gold film is face down and placed on a slide glass that is also coated with a gold film to form a double gold film. A laser beam directs the array and tests its performance from different angles.
Researchers believe that this array can also be used to test the performance of "invisibility cloak" individuals, especially when they are placed together. In this study, the "invisibility cloak" worked very well when aligned along the direction of light. However, when light is irradiated from other angles, the "stealth" effect is not noticeable.
