SABIC Innovative Plastics' Ammonia-resistant Lexan*DMX Resin Helps Extend Life of Norka Energy-Saving LED Lamps

On August 27, 2010, Norka, the world's leading German luminaire manufacturer, selected SABIC Innovative Plastics' ultra-high performance Lexan*DMX polycarbonate (PC) copolymer resin for its new Luzern 38 LED light tube production line. Lexan DMX resins can withstand harsh conditions and high levels of ammonia, such as livestock sheds, zoo cages and other animal confinement fields, enabling Norka to create special lighting products specifically targeted at this niche market. Unlike traditional PC materials, the new Lexan DMX resin has excellent transparency, anti-fogging properties and resistance to light reduction. Even if exposed to ammonia gas for a long time, it is not easy to become brittle, thereby prolonging lamp life and reducing energy consumption. With this unique application technology, Norka and SABIC Innovative Plastics have further consolidated their long-term cooperation and highlighted SABIC Innovative Plastics' market value in the field of polycarbonate copolymers.

In the past, Norka used incandescent tubes and standard PCs to make lamps. However, after being used for about a year, these lamps will be discarded because the lamp burns out or the plastic of these lamps becomes no longer transparent due to the effect of ammonia gas. In order to create a more environmentally friendly, energy-saving, longer-life lamp, Norka began to use LED as a material. At the same time, they also need a higher quality plastic that matches the long life of the LED.

Norka’s CEO Martin C. Stäcker said: “Norka is proud of its leading technology and we are always looking for suppliers who are as committed to innovation as we are and can provide the best materials. This is what we have been for many years. One of the reasons for working with SABIC Innovative Plastics is that they can quickly provide specialty materials solutions for a range of special lighting products, such as the new Lexan DMX resin.Therefore, we believe that no matter how difficult these requirements are, sand Bertrand Innovative Plastics can always accurately meet our requirements."

Rob de Jong, Head of European Product Marketing for SABIC Innovative Plastics Lexan Copolymer Resins, said: "The professional application of Lexan DMX resin demonstrates the importance of SABIC Innovative Plastics' strategic innovation. We have been working on Lexan for a long time. Cobalt's super-performance product line invests in exciting new design choices for customers like Norka, which helps differentiate products, expand new markets and improve overall quality and performance. Focus on innovative materials that can be used for sustainable applications, such as energy-efficient LED lighting applications."

Excellent performance compared to PMMA and standard PC

Norka initially opted for polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) for use in Luzern LED lamps, but later found that the material did not provide a sufficiently high heat distortion temperature and impact resistance, and that it was also effective in the glow wire ignition test (GWIT). not ideal. In contrast, Lexan DMX copolymers pass the 850C GWIT, which is a key requirement for luminaire product applications in some countries (eg France) to achieve railway specifications and achieve better durability.

Lexan DMX resin has H grade pencil hardness, surface hardness 2.5 times that of standard PC, and excellent scratch resistance without the need for special coatings. When exposed to ammonia, Lexan DMX resin maintains its clarity, surface finish, and extensibility, ensuring that the luminaire continues to maintain a good appearance, transmits light efficiently, and avoids the risk of possible cracking.

When applied to Luzern luminaires, SABIC Innovative Plastics provides a transparent, water-like material that is extruded into a tubular shape and used as a housing for LED lights.

Other possible applications for Lexan DMX copolymers include keypads and touch screens for electronic products, frames for televisions and notebooks, lenses, composite films, and scratch-resistant panels.

SABIC Innovative Plastics will present its high-performance material solutions for the LED industry in its 2010 K Show. At that time, SABIC Innovative Plastics will highlight Norka's Luzern 38 LED lamps and other new applications to demonstrate the company's commitment to the LED industry.

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) will attend the 2010 International Plastics and Rubber Show (K-Show) in Düsseldorf, Germany. The exhibition area will be located in Hall 6, Stand D42.

The theme of SABIC's 2010 K show is "Culture of Innovation", which aims to highlight the company's investment in development, technology, sustainability, and customer orientation. We help our customers innovate in the following four ways so that their applications stand out from the competition and optimize costs:
·Investment in global business development;
Provide the most comprehensive range of products with superior performance and added value;
· Develop environmentally friendly products and solutions that provide significant, quantifiable performance advantages;
· Work side-by-side with customers to establish long-term, solid relationships.
