Do weed burners work ?Weed burner torches have become the go-to solution for chemical-free weed control. In theory, it sounds great, but does it hold up in practice?
The answer is yes, weed burning is highly effective when done right. However, it depends on a few factors: the size of your torch and the technique you use.
Â
What is the best weed burner Torch Size ?This depends on the size of the area you're dealing with and how often you plan to use it. For small gardens, patios, or footpaths, a MAP-gas or Butane Aerosol torch might suffice. These are relatively inexpensive, usually under $50*, making them a good starting point to test out weed burning.
However, for larger areas or frequent weed control, you’ll need something more powerful. That’s where LPG “BBQ†bottle-powered torches come in handy. They provide a larger and more intense flame, allowing you to cover more ground quickly.
LPG burner torches come in different power outputs. The Platinum LT40 torch is available in several kit options, with the "Maxflame" kit being one of the most powerful, offering a massive max output of 475,000 BTU. Priced at $259*, it’s a great investment for a high-quality, European-made product. Alternatively, the Handyflame kit with an output of 370,000 BTU is priced at $183*.
Â
What is the correct method for weed burning ?Burning weeds seems simple enough – just light the torch and burn them, right? Well, yes, but there’s a crucial detail that makes all the difference between success and failure in your battle against weeds.
First, avoid burning the plant entirely. Burning it to ashes will kill the visible part of the weed, but it often won’t kill the root, meaning it could grow back. Instead, aim to "scorch" the weed without completely destroying it. By heating the main stem and cooking the sap or moisture inside, you’ll damage the plant’s cell structure, which is far more likely to kill the entire plant. Sometimes you might even see moisture bubbling on the stem while you're doing this. Just stop before it turns into dry ash. Victory achieved!
