LPG/Propane vs Butane (Aerosol / Pressure Pack) Weed Burner Torches

Butane torches are ideal for small-scale weed burning on patios or for dealing with minor weed problems. However, they fall short when it comes to tackling larger areas or denser weed patches due to their slower performance.

Do weed burners work?

Weed burner torches have emerged as the latest trend in chemical-free weed control. In theory, it sounds fantastic, but does weed burning actually work in practice?

The answer is yes, weed burning genuinely kills weeds... provided your torch is appropriately sized for your task and you use the proper technique.

What is the best weed burner Torch Size?

This depends on the specific application, particularly the size of the garden or vegetated area you're working on... as well as how frequently you plan to do weeding.

For small gardens, patios, footpaths, and similar spaces, a MAP-gas or Butane Aerosol torch is usually enough. These are relatively inexpensive—typically less than $50*—and provide an easy way to test out how weed burning works in action.

However, if you're dealing with anything beyond patio-sized jobs where there's a larger area of weeds to manage (and possibly larger weeds themselves), MAP-gas or Butane torches won’t cut it—they'll end up being frustratingly slow. That’s when you should consider torches powered by LPG “BBQ” bottles, which offer a larger and more powerful flame, enabling you to cover larger areas quickly.

LPG burner torches can vary in terms of output too. The Platinum LT40 torch is available in different kit options, with the "Maxflame" kit being one of the most potent torches around, boasting a staggering max output of 475,000 BTU. Definitely your top-tier weed-fighting tool! At $259*, it’s quite affordable for a European-made quality product. Alternatively, there’s the Handyflame kit with an output of 370,000 BTU for just $183.

What is the correct method for weed burning?

Seems simple enough—just light the torch and burn the weeds, right? Well, yes, that’s the general idea, but there’s one crucial point that separates success from failure in your battle against weeds.

Firstly, avoid burning the plants entirely—down to the ground. While this might destroy the visible part of the plant, it usually won’t kill it completely, meaning it will grow back. Instead, what you want to do is “cook” the weed but not completely destroy it. While the outer leaves will be consumed, the goal is to damage the plant's cell structure by boiling the sap or moisture in the main stem. If done correctly, this approach will significantly increase your chances of killing the entire plant. Sometimes, you’ll even notice moisture bubbling on the surface of the plant stem while you’re doing this. Just stop before it turns into dry charcoal or ash. You’ve won!
