Plastic
Plastics are a broad category of materials that can be categorized into thermoplastics and thermosets based on their response to heat. Thermoplastics become soft when heated, allowing them to be molded into various shapes. Once cooled, they retain their form. Common thermoplastics include polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA or plexiglass), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), nylon, polycarbonate (PC), polyurethane (PU), Teflon (PTFE), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET). On the other hand, thermosetting plastics undergo a chemical change when heated, forming a rigid, cross-linked structure that cannot be remolded. Examples of thermosets include epoxy resins, phenolic plastics, polyimides, and melamine formaldehyde resins. These materials are often used in high-temperature environments due to their stability.
Plastic processing methods vary depending on the material and desired product. Common techniques include injection molding, extrusion, blow molding, and hot pressing. Each method is chosen based on factors like material type, product complexity, and production scale.
Rubber
Rubber can be either natural or synthetic. Natural rubber is primarily composed of polyisoprene and is derived from the latex of rubber trees. It is known for its elasticity and is used in tires, seals, and medical products.
Synthetic rubbers, such as butyl rubber, butadiene rubber, neoprene, EPDM, acrylate rubber, and urethane rubber, offer improved properties like resistance to heat, oil, and chemicals. Other specialized types include silicone rubber and fluororubber, which are used in high-performance applications like aerospace and automotive industries.
Fiber
Polymers also play a significant role in the production of fibers. Synthetic fibers, such as nylon, polyester, acrylics, and aramid fibers (like Kevlar), are widely used in textiles, clothing, and technical fabrics. These fibers are valued for their strength, durability, and versatility.
Coating
Polymer coatings are applied to surfaces to enhance appearance, provide protection, or improve functionality. In industrial settings, common coating materials include epoxy resins and polyurethanes. These coatings are used to protect metal surfaces from corrosion, increase wear resistance, and add aesthetic value to products.
