It is no longer difficult to understand the various types of pipe fittings.

When homeowners are in the process of renovating or maintaining their homes, they often come across various types of pipes. Understanding the characteristics and applications of these materials is essential for making informed decisions about installation and maintenance.

1. UPVC (Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride) is a type of rigid plastic pipe commonly used in plumbing systems. It is typically joined using adhesive, which makes it easy to install. However, UPVC has poor resistance to heat and freezing temperatures, so it is not suitable for hot water systems. It also lacks high pressure resistance, limiting its use to cold water applications. Additionally, recent studies have raised concerns about the chemical additives used in PVC, such as phthalates, which can be harmful to human health, affecting the kidneys, liver, and reproductive system, and may even lead to cancer.

2. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is a versatile material known for its acid and alkali resistance, wear resistance, and good electrical insulation. However, it has poor thermal stability and light resistance. When heated above 140°C, it releases hydrogen chloride, which requires the addition of stabilizers during processing. The softening temperature is low, usually below 80°C, and the material can be made softer by adding plasticizers. Soft PVC is often used for insulation in cables, films, raincoats, and artificial leather, while rigid PVC is used for pipes, tanks, and other structural components. It can be produced via suspension or emulsion polymerization, resulting in different forms like powdery resin or paste resin.

3. ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a strong and impact-resistant thermoplastic. It comes in various grades, including general-purpose, flame-retardant, heat-resistant, electroplated, transparent, and structural foaming types. General-purpose ABS is widely used in consumer electronics, toys, and automotive parts. Flame-retardant grades are ideal for electronic housings and appliances. Heat-resistant ABS is used in industrial equipment, while electroplated grades are popular in automotive and decorative components. Transparent ABS is used for refrigerator parts and dials. Its versatility makes it a popular choice in many industries.

4. PP (Polypropylene) is a lightweight, odorless, and non-toxic material with excellent mechanical properties and heat resistance, capable of withstanding continuous use up to 110–120°C. It is chemically stable, resistant to most chemicals except strong oxidants, and has good water resistance and electrical insulation. However, it is prone to aging and has lower impact strength at low temperatures. PP is commonly used in injection molding, films, pipes, sheets, fibers, and coatings, with wide applications in packaging, automotive, and medical fields.

5. PE (Polyethylene) is another common plastic used in piping systems. It is tasteless, non-toxic, and highly resistant to chemicals, remaining insoluble in solvents at room temperature. It has excellent low-temperature resistance, operating down to -70°C to -100°C. PE is also an excellent electrical insulator with low water absorption. Depending on density, its physical properties vary. High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is used for pipes and containers, while low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is used for films and flexible packaging. PE is widely used in agriculture, packaging, electronics, and daily life products.

6. PS (Polystyrene) is a rigid, transparent plastic often used in packaging, lighting, and electrical insulation. Biaxially oriented polystyrene films are commonly used in food packaging and electrical applications. PS is also used in audio and video cases, CD-ROM boxes, and interior decorations due to its clarity and ease of processing.

Choosing the right pipe material depends on the specific application, environmental conditions, and safety considerations. Whether for residential or industrial use, understanding the properties of each type of pipe ensures better performance and longevity.
