Solar Frontier's CIS solar cell module achieves 14.6 conversion efficiency

Solar Frontier's CIS solar cell module conversion efficiency reaches 14.6%

On June 18, 2013, Solar Frontier announced a significant achievement in its solar technology, reporting that the conversion efficiency of its CIS (Copper Indium Selenide) solar cell modules produced at the Guofu plant in Miyazaki, Japan, reached an impressive 14.6%. The maximum output power for these modules was recorded at 179.8W, matching the performance level of polycrystalline silicon solar panels. These figures have been verified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), ensuring they meet rigorous safety and certification standards.

The Guofu Plant is the primary manufacturing facility for Solar Frontier, having started commercial production in February 2011. With an annual production capacity of around 900MW, the plant has continuously worked to improve the efficiency of its modules through ongoing research and development. This latest milestone marks the highest conversion efficiency achieved at this site so far, with the module dimensions measuring 977mm × 1257mm × 35mm.

In addition to its progress in module efficiency, Solar Frontier has also made headlines for its achievements in smaller-scale solar cells. The company reported a world-leading conversion efficiency of 17.8% in 30cm² CIS sub-modules and an impressive 19.7% efficiency in ultra-thin film solar cells measuring approximately 0.5cm², all without the use of cadmium. These breakthroughs highlight the company’s strong commitment to innovation and sustainability in the renewable energy sector.
