According to foreign media reports, once discarded, sponge-like polyurethane foam will be buried, and then this will occupy a lot of space. Now thanks to a newly developed process, it can be quickly recycled into high-quality rubber and hard plastic. Polyurethane foam is commonly used in products such as mattresses, insulation materials and cushions. It has strong chemical bonds, prevents melting and is difficult to recycle.
Some organizations try to transform it into a recyclable solid form, and compress it to remove its bubbles. Unfortunately, the resulting material tends to crack or be uneven. In fact, when the foam is reused, it is usually just broken down into low-value fibers for carpets.
To expand the possibility of recycling, scientists from the University of Minnesota and Northwestern University of Illinois designed a process in which they first mixed polyurethane foam waste with a catalyst solution, which made the foam malleable.
Next, the processed foam passes through a twin-screw extruder, which uses two mutually co-rotating screws to drive the abrasive material, during which the air in the foam is removed. The end result is either hard plastic or soft rubber, which is actually more valuable than the original foam. Among other uses, they can also be used in products such as car bumpers, watch straps, shopping carts or skateboard wheels.
"Our latest work effectively removes air from polyurethane foam and reshapes it into any shape," said William Dichtel, a Northwestern University professor who collaborated with Associate Professor Christopher Ellison of the University of Minnesota in this study. Polyurethane foam waste is used to pave the way for many related applications. "
