This initiative marks a significant shift in the maintenance and enhancement of road surfaces, particularly in the tunnel section located at station K2964+684 to K2964+984, where a 300-meter stretch of cement pavement is being transformed into a smooth black asphalt surface. This is the first time such an upgrade has been carried out in the Taibai section, aiming to improve both comfort and safety for drivers.
Due to the high volume of traffic and heavy vehicles passing through the Tai-Yu section, the existing cement pavement has suffered extensive damage, leading to a significant reduction in its skid resistance. This not only affects the overall driving experience but also poses a serious risk of accidents. Therefore, the need for this transformation has become urgent. The Thai Baht Conservation Center has taken a scientific and methodical approach, tailoring the construction process to the specific conditions of the tunnel road.
To ensure a clean and effective surface preparation, the center has introduced advanced equipment, including a shot blasting machine. This device uses high-speed steel shots to impact the road surface, effectively removing contaminants like oil and debris while creating a rough texture ideal for the next phase of construction. The steel shots are automatically recycled within the system, and dust is collected in a dedicated unit, making the entire process environmentally friendly and dust-free.
In addition to improving cleanliness, this process significantly enhances the road's texture and friction coefficient, contributing to safer driving conditions. The center has also focused on innovation, adopting methods such as using emulsified asphalt during paving. This technique helps maintain optimal asphalt temperature, ensuring better quality and compaction, which meets all required standards.
The improved adhesion between the modified road surface and vehicle tires greatly enhances the road’s skid resistance, increasing driver comfort and safety. It also ensures that the road meets the necessary requirements for load-bearing capacity and durability, ultimately extending its lifespan.
