Nitro Varnish
Nitro varnish is a type of clear lacquer made from nitrocellulose, alkyd resins, plasticizers, and organic solvents. It dries quickly and provides a soft gloss finish, making it ideal for various applications.
This type of varnish comes in different finishes, such as high-gloss, semi-matte, and matte, allowing users to choose based on their preference. However, it has some drawbacks, including the tendency to whiten in humid conditions, lower film thickness, and reduced hardness compared to other types of coatings.
Friendship White Wood Lacquer
1. Hand-swept Paint: A type of nitro varnish that is not transparent, made from nitrocellulose, synthetic resins, pigments, and solvents. It's specifically designed for manual application and offers quick drying times.
2. Key Additives in Nitrocellulose Lacquer
Tianna water is a colorless liquid with a banana-like smell, composed of esters, alcohols, benzene, and ketones. It helps adjust the consistency of the lacquer and acts as a curing agent.
White water, also known as anti-whitening agent, is ethylene glycol monobutyl ether. In humid weather, it can help prevent the paint film from becoming white when applied. Adding 10–15% of this solution can significantly reduce the whitening effect.
Polyester Paint
Polyester paint is a thick lacquer made primarily from polyester resin. It forms a full, thick film and is available in both paint and varnish forms.
When applying polyester paint, a curing agent must be added—typically one-third of the total paint volume. These hardeners are mainly composed of TDI (toluene diisocyanate), which can cause yellowing over time. This yellowing affects not only the painted surface but also nearby walls. Although yellowing-resistant versions are now available, they cannot completely prevent discoloration. Additionally, excessive free TDI can be harmful to human health, causing irritation, respiratory issues, and allergic reactions. International safety standards limit free TDI to below 0.5%.
Polyurethane Paint
Polyurethane paint is a durable coating known for its strong film formation, high luster, excellent adhesion, and resistance to water, abrasion, and corrosion. It is widely used in high-end wood furniture and even on metal surfaces.
Despite its advantages, polyurethane paint can suffer from issues like blistering and chalking. Like polyester paint, it may also experience yellowing over time. The varnish version of polyurethane paint is known as polyurethane varnish.
