Chinese yam property

Chinese Yam Properties:

Medicinal Overview

Source: This product is the dried rhizome of Dioscorea zingiberensis. After the stems and leaves wither in winter, the roots are harvested, cleaned, and the outer skin and fibrous roots are removed. The yam is then smoked and dried. High-quality yams are selected for their straight and smooth shape. They are soaked in water until fully softened, then fumigated with sulfur, cut at both ends, and pressed into a column shape using a wooden board before being dried thoroughly. These are known as "light yam."

Properties: The product appears slightly cylindrical, often curved or slightly flattened, measuring between 15 to 30 cm in length and 1.5 to 6 cm in diameter. It is heavy, solid, and not easily broken, with a white, powdery cross-section. It has no distinct odor, a mild taste, slightly acidic, and is chewy and sticky. Light yam is more uniform in shape, cylindrical, with flat ends, typically 9 to 18 cm long and 1.5 to 3 cm in diameter. Its surface is smooth, ranging from white to pale yellowish-white.

Identification: Starch granules appear as single ovate, oval, triangular, or oblong shapes, ranging from 8 to 35 μm in diameter. They have an umbilical point, herringbone, cross, or short slit patterns, and show visible striations. Some may consist of 2 to 3 divisions. Calcium oxalate needle bundles are found within mucous cells, approximately 240 μm long and 2 to 5 μm thick. Vessel elements, net-like structures, threads, and annular tubes have diameters between 12 to 48 μm.

Taste and Meridian: Sweet and neutral. It returns to the spleen, lung, and kidney meridians.

Functions and Indications: It helps strengthen the spleen and stomach, nourishes the lungs, and tonifies the kidneys. It is used for conditions such as spleen deficiency, chronic diarrhea, lung weakness with asthma, kidney deficiency with nocturnal emission, uterine prolapse, frequent urination, and virtual heat with thirst.

Bran-fried yam enhances its ability to nourish the spleen and stomach. It is particularly useful for cases of spleen deficiency, reduced appetite, diarrhea, and vaginal discharge.

Usage and Dosage: 15 to 30 grams per day.

Contraindications: Since it can nourish yin, it is not suitable for individuals with excessive dampness or stagnation. While generally safe, it may cause discomfort in people with colds, dry stools, or gastrointestinal stagnation due to its astringent nature.

Storage: Keep in a dry and well-ventilated area.
