Chinese Yam Properties:
Medicinal Overview
Source: This product is the dried rhizome of Dioscorea zingiberensis. After the winter stems and leaves wither, the roots are removed, washed, and the outer skin and fibrous roots are peeled off. The yam is then smoked and dried. The dried yam is carefully selected for straightness, smoothness, and moisture content. After soaking in water until fully hydrated, it is treated with sulfur smoke, cut at both ends, shaped into a column using a wooden board, and finally dried to produce what is known as "light yam."
Properties: The product appears slightly cylindrical, curved, and slightly flattened, measuring 15 to 30 cm in length and 1.5 to 6 cm in diameter. It is heavy, solid, and not easily broken, with a white cross-section that is powdery. It has no distinct odor, a mild taste, and a slightly acidic flavor. It is chewy and sticky. Light yam is more cylindrical, with flush ends, ranging from 9 to 18 cm long and 1.5 to 3 cm in diameter. Its surface is smooth, appearing white or pale yellowish-white.
Identification: Starch granules are mostly single-ovate, oval, triangular, or oblong, with diameters ranging from 8 to 35 μm. They have an umbilical point, herringbone, cross, or short slit pattern, and visible striations. Some may consist of 2 to 3 divisions.
Calcium oxalate needle bundles are found within mucous cells, measuring approximately 240 μm in length and 2 to 5 μm in thickness.
Cells around the vessel elements, net-like structures, fibers, and annular tubes have diameters ranging from 12 to 48 μm.
Taste and Meridian: Sweet and neutral. It affects the spleen, lung, and kidney meridians.
Functions and Indications: It helps strengthen the spleen and stomach, nourish the lungs, and tonify the kidneys. It is used for conditions such as spleen deficiency, chronic diarrhea, lung deficiency with asthma, kidney deficiency with nocturnal emission, uterine prolapse, frequent urination, and virtual heat with thirst.
Bran-fried yam is particularly beneficial for strengthening the spleen and stomach. It is recommended for cases of spleen deficiency, reduced appetite, diarrhea, and excessive vaginal discharge.
Usage and Dosage: 15 to 30 grams per day.
Contraindications: Since this herb can nourish yin, it is not suitable for individuals with dampness accumulation, stagnation, or excess pathogenic factors. While generally safe, yam should be used with caution by those suffering from colds, dry stools, or gastrointestinal stagnation due to its astringent properties.
Storage: Keep in a dry and well-ventilated area.
