There is a choice of bamboo flooring: symmetrical balance is very important

Natural Color Becomes a New Favorite

Bamboo flooring on the market is mainly divided into two categories based on color: natural and carbonized. Natural bamboo flooring has a more uniform appearance compared to wooden floors, as the growth radius of bamboo is much smaller, resulting in less color variation. Additionally, bamboo is less affected by sunlight, so the difference between the shaded and sunlit sides is not as pronounced. This leads to a more consistent and balanced color tone, making it ideal for those who prefer a clean and elegant look.

Natural bamboo can be further categorized into original color and carbonized color. The original color retains the bright and fresh hue of bamboo, often treated with a clear varnish to enhance its natural beauty. Carbonized bamboo, on the other hand, has a deeper, richer tone similar to walnut wood. It undergoes a baking process that enhances its durability while still revealing the distinct bamboo grain, offering a sophisticated and calm aesthetic.

There's also artificial lacquered bamboo flooring, which allows for a wide range of colors and finishes. However, this type tends to have less visible bamboo patterns, making it more suitable for modern or minimalist interiors. Most customers prefer natural bamboo flooring because of its simple yet elegant style and prominent bamboo patterns, which reflect the quiet charm of bamboo, aligning well with current design trends.

The surface treatment of bamboo flooring typically includes three options: matte finish, glossy finish, and wear-resistant finish. Each offers different benefits depending on the desired look and level of durability required.

Symmetrical Balance Matters

One of the key factors in ensuring the stability of bamboo flooring is whether the structure is symmetrical and balanced. There are currently three main types of bamboo flooring structures available: flat-pressed, side-pressed, and medium-cross. Among these, flat-pressed flooring is the most common in the market. Side-pressed and medium-cross types are produced by only a few domestic manufacturers, making them less widely available.

Bamboo Age Isn't Always Better

During a visit to a building materials store, I overheard a salesperson promoting their bamboo flooring by saying, “Our bamboo is of high quality, and the bamboo used is 9 years old.” Many consumers believe that older bamboo makes for stronger and more durable flooring. However, this isn’t necessarily true. The optimal age for bamboo used in flooring is between 4 to 6 years. If the bamboo is too young (less than 4 years), it’s too tender and lacks structural strength. On the other hand, bamboo that’s over 9 years old may have thick, hard skin that makes it difficult to work with. Both extremes can negatively impact the stability and performance of the finished product.

Size Shouldn’t Be Too Large

When it comes to geothermal bamboo flooring, narrower planks are generally more stable due to reduced internal stress. For best results, the width of the planks should not exceed 125 mm, the surface thickness should be no more than 4 mm, and the total thickness of the floor should not go beyond 15 mm. These specifications help ensure long-term durability and minimize warping or deformation.

Moisture Content Must Be Controlled

Two major factors that affect the stability of any flooring are dry shrinkage and moisture expansion. To prevent these issues, it's crucial to choose bamboo flooring with a moisture content of no more than 8%. Keeping the moisture level within this range significantly improves the floor’s resistance to changes in humidity and temperature, ensuring a longer lifespan and better performance over time.
