In early August, the Zhejiang Dongyang Consumer Rights Protection Committee issued a consumer warning about the risks of using water heaters that have exceeded their service life. According to the warning, once a water heater has been in use for more than eight years, it should be replaced immediately. Similar warnings were also issued by the Shanghai Consumer Protection Committee. However, during a recent investigation, it was found that many residents still choose to keep old water heaters, often saying "if it still works, why replace it?" This attitude reflects a lack of awareness regarding safety. Some units are even installed without following national standards, posing serious risks, including potential electric shocks from faulty installations.
Experts have emphasized that improving public safety awareness is essential, but more importantly, strict adherence to national safety regulations must be enforced. They pointed out that most accidents involving electric water heaters are linked to aging equipment, worn-out wiring, and internal tank leaks. Many older models lack the anti-electric wall technology required by national standards, which significantly reduces their ability to protect users from electrical hazards.
The anti-electric wall technology, introduced as a national standard in 2007 by the China Household Electrical Appliances Standardization Committee, was developed by Haier to address common issues such as ungrounded wiring, aging cables, and poor-quality sockets. This patented technology isolates the current in the inner tank caused by leaks, preventing electric shocks. It also protects against damage from faulty grounding or water pipes.
After being adopted as an international standard in 2008, the anti-electric wall was included in the latest version of the "Special Requirements for Safe Storage Water Heaters for Household and Similar Electrical Appliances." The principle behind this technology is simple: it acts like a large resistor between the user and the water, reducing voltage during a leak and preventing electric shocks. According to Haier, even with 220V applied to the inner tank, the technology ensures no harm to the user.
Haier’s anti-electric wall technology has not only gained international recognition but has also prevented over 25 million incidents. As the first national standard in Chinese household appliances derived from an enterprise patent, it represents a significant milestone in the industry. Thanks to this innovation, Haier has led the way in energy-efficient and smart water heater solutions tailored to user needs.
According to data from the British Institute of Building Services Research and Information (BSRIA), a leading independent research organization, Haier ranked first globally in both overall sales and electric water heater market share, with 9% and 17% respectively. The company was also recognized as a "world-renowned brand."
Industry analysts suggest that while consumer demands continue to evolve, safety remains the top priority, especially for products that combine water and electricity. Therefore, they recommend that consumers look for the anti-electric wall standard when purchasing a water heater to ensure maximum safety and avoid unnecessary risks.
