Alon Gorodetsky, an associate professor of chemical engineering and materials science at the University of California, led a team of researchers who developed a thin film material that responds to external signals and changes color and reflectivity. The key component of this film is a protein called reflectin, which allows catfish, octopus, and other species to rapidly change body color. The protein can change color in response to chemical stimuli.
