The door has always played a central role in feng shui, from ancient times to the present. It is considered the most important element in a building or room, influencing the energy flow and overall harmony of the space. In traditional Chinese architecture, there are five main types of doors: the main gate (outer gate), the middle door, the inner door, the courtyard door, and the side door.
The outer gate, or main gate, is the primary entrance to the house and should be aligned with the "Kyrgyzstan" direction, which refers to the favorable energy flow according to feng shui principles. The middle door, located inside the outer gate, is less significant but still needs to avoid being directly opposite the "main murderer" — an unfavorable position that can bring negative energy. Each bedroom’s main door should also avoid harmful directions to maintain balance and safety.
In houses with courtyards, the courtyard door serves as the secondary entrance, often positioned to align with the Kyrgyzstan direction or the five-line gate for better family harmony. If any door is considered "murderous," it should be closed or shielded. Left and right doors must be balanced, with the left door ideally closed if the right one is open, and vice versa.
Side doors, typically found in individual bedrooms, are known as "Xiji" and should avoid strong energies. When two doors exist, the left one is associated with the wife, while the right one represents the husband. This balance helps maintain harmony within the household.
The location of the door is crucial in determining the energy of the entire home. The door itself is considered the "Kyrgyzstan" of the house, and its placement must be carefully chosen. When opening a new door, it's essential to use a compass to determine the correct orientation. For example, if the building is 60 feet long, the compass should be placed at 30 feet. This ensures the door aligns properly with the surrounding environment.
Too many doors can create confusion and weaken the energy flow, just like multiple road forks. Doors should not face places like government offices, warehouses, temples, or city gates, as these are considered "main murderers." A straight street facing the door is also unfavorable, while a curved street in front of the door is more harmonious.
The size of the door should match the scale of the house. A small door may hinder air circulation and make movement difficult, while a large door that doesn’t fit the structure can feel unsafe or impractical. The outer and inner gates should be consistent in design to maintain harmony between the exterior and interior spaces.
The color of the door should align with the five elements and the directional orientation. Black is generally avoided for the main gate. The front gate should not be used as a back door, and south-facing doors or windows should have eaves or sunshades for protection. Iron gates should not be sealed completely or designed in a way that looks unattractive, such as resembling a prison.
The main gate and back door should not be directly aligned, as this can cause financial loss and imbalance. The back door should be kept closed when possible. Doors should not be slanted, as this can create tension and discomfort.
A large door in a small house can be overwhelming, and a single-room house without a back door is not ideal. Gates should not be uneven on one side, and old doors should be replaced when necessary. Doors should not be directly connected to back doors or windows, as this can create a "heart-breaking" effect.
Beams should not be placed above the door, and the door should not be arched. It should never be used as a toilet or kitchen door. If two doors face each other, it can lead to conflict or illness, so adding a curtain is recommended. Having three doors in a row is considered unlucky, as it suggests disagreement or disputes.
Finally, the door should be paired with a welcome mat. The mat’s color should correspond to the direction the door faces: black for east and northeast, green for south and southeast, yellow for west and southwest, and white for north and northwest. This helps enhance positive energy and protect the home.
