A research team at the University of Connecticut recently developed a lightweight 3D printing plug-in that can be installed on a smartphone to turn the phone into a sickle cell tester.
Sickle cell anemia is a hereditary disease caused by mutations in hemoglobin that inhibit blood flow. In addition to anemia, clinical manifestations include periodic pain, which can lead to multiple lung, kidney, liver, and brain embolism, causing organ damage and stroke. The disease affects approximately 25% of the population in Central and West Africa, but the detection of this disease is often expensive and requires specialized equipment and necessary personnel training.
The device, developed by Dr. Sawas Tassoglu of the University of Connecticut and his research team, includes a 3D printing plug-in and a companion app that can be installed on a mobile phone. Using a magnetic levitation technology, the tester uses an optical lens and a smartphone lens to analyze red blood cells in the sample. The accompanying application will automatically analyze the distribution of red blood cells to confirm the presence of sickle cell anemia.
The researchers said that the device has passed preliminary tests, and the people involved in the tester validation study consisted of patients with clinical diagnosis of sickle cell anemia and a control group. However, it does not include carriers of the sickle cell anemia gene (only one mutation is carried). Next, the researchers need further research to determine whether this magnetic levitation platform can distinguish between patients with sickle cell anemia and sickle cell anemia gene carriers.
