According to a report by the Kyodo News Agency on October 26, in order to eliminate the language barriers between foreigners and Japanese, Panasonic, NTT, KDDI and other companies jointly established a new organization to expand multilingual translation technology. With the goal of hosting the Tokyo Olympics in 2020, these companies plan to launch translation services for tourist attractions and hospitals to improve the environment for foreigners.
The new organization will develop technologies that accurately recognize human voices in noise and convert Japanese images captured by smartphones into foreign languages. Translation technology will be applied in hospitals, department stores, taxis and other places.
Technology development will be carried out in 2015-2019 with the support of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, and the participating teams can share the results. The Japanese government has proposed to increase the number of foreign tourists to 20 million in the year of 2020. Supporting the development of translation technology is intended to increase the number of tourists and the rate of revisiting by increasing satisfaction.
