Method for identifying failure of wettable powders and emulsion pesticides

Recently, many vegetable farmers have been asking about how to determine if unpacked pesticides are still effective. Here’s a simple guide on identifying the quality of wettable powders and emulsions. The China Pesticide Network team shares some practical tips:

For wettable powders, the product should be a fine, free-flowing powder with no clumping and a consistent color. If the powder is clumped together, has an unusual smell, or forms lumps when squeezed, it may have lost its effectiveness. To test it further, take 30 grams of the pesticide and mix it with a small amount of water to form a paste. Then add 150 grams of water and stir thoroughly. If the mixture doesn’t dissolve well or settles quickly, it’s likely that the pesticide has degraded.

When it comes to emulsifiable concentrates, the liquid should remain uniform and clear, without any sediment or oil separation. If you notice that an unused bottle of emulsion has become cloudy, shows sediment, or has floating particles, shake the bottle vigorously. Let it sit for one hour. If the contents remain mixed and don’t separate, the pesticide is still good. However, if layers form again, it means the product has expired.

Another way to test emulsions is by placing the bottle in warm water for an hour. If the sediment dissolves slowly, the pesticide is still usable. But if the sediment remains hard or doesn’t dissolve at all, the product has likely deteriorated. You can also perform a simple test by mixing 1 gram of the emulsifier with 100 grams of water. After stirring well and letting it sit for an hour, check the result. If the liquid is milky white with no oil layer on top and no sediment at the bottom, the pesticide is in good condition. However, if there’s oil floating or sediment at the bottom, the product has probably gone bad.

These methods can help you quickly assess whether your pesticides are still safe and effective to use. For more information on pesticide application and safety, visit the China Pesticide Network.
