On November 18th, I had the chance to attend the opening ceremony for the newly established Hangzhou Public Security Fire Station's subway fire station. Located in the Niu Chang area of Peng Jing Town in the Jiang Gan district, this facility covers roughly 1.07 hectares, with green spaces taking up about 0.25 hectares and the remaining 0.82 hectares designated for construction. The site features an outdoor training area complete with a 100-meter sprint track and a basketball court. The building itself consists of both operational and auxiliary structures, offering a total floor space of 5,450 square meters and costing approximately 27.27 million RMB.
This particular fire brigade will focus on ensuring fire safety and handling emergency responses once Hangzhou’s Metro Line 1 begins regular service. They plan to invest around 38.9 million RMB in specialized firefighting vehicles like compressed air foam trucks, smoke extraction engines, chemical decontamination vehicles, rail-mounted units, heavy-duty foam carriers, and lighting fire trucks.
Given the unique challenges posed by subway environments, Chief of Staff He Shuhua explained how the Hangzhou detachment leverages its proximity to the Seventh Fort Group and their extensive training facilities. This allows them to conduct specialized drills tailored to underground settings, including confined space operations, search formations, rapid life-saving access creation, and smoke removal tactics—all critical skills needed when dealing with potential emergencies post-subway activation.
Considering the vast length of the metro lines, the station aims to enhance response times while minimizing redundancy through collaboration between above-ground and below-ground teams. By adopting a regional firefighting approach supported by professionals, they hope to provide robust protection against unforeseen incidents within these confined spaces.
Once Metro Line 1 starts running tests, every fire station along the line, excluding the main subway fire station, will remain prepared around-the-clock. In case of trouble, nearby stations can respond swiftly within five minutes, ensuring quick intervention during crises beneath the city streets.
Currently, there are 13 active fire stations along Metro Line 1 staffed by approximately 400 personnel operating 75 vehicles. Among these assets are 14 compressed air foam trucks, nine medium-sized tank foam carriers, one Land Rover 60 firefighting robot, and even a set of German-made Smiths fire motorcycles designed specifically to handle detailed rescue missions across the operational network.
