
Wind energy is set to experience a dramatic expansion in the coming years, according to a recent report from the Global Wind Energy Association and Greenpeace. The total global wind power capacity is expected to surge more than fourfold by 2030, rising from 240 GW at the end of 2011 to over 1,100 GW by 2020. This growth could potentially meet up to one-fifth of the world's energy needs, signaling a major shift toward sustainable power sources.
Svensky, a senior energy expert with Greenpeace, emphasized that long-term policy stability is key to the continued success of the wind power industry. Consistent government support sends a strong message to investors, helping to build confidence and drive innovation in the sector. It also reflects the broader vision of how wind energy can contribute to global energy security and environmental sustainability.
The report highlights that wind energy could supply between 11.7% and 12.6% of global electricity demand, which would result in a significant reduction of nearly 1.7 billion tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. Even under less optimistic scenarios, where wind capacity might only reach 587–759 GW, it would still account for over 8% of the world’s electricity supply. However, the study stresses that robust and sustained government backing is essential to ensure this renewable energy sector continues to thrive.
In addition to wind power, other renewable sectors like solar energy and clean technology are also gaining momentum and are expected to become dominant players in the global energy market. By 2020, the wind industry alone is projected to create around 2.1 billion jobs worldwide. After an initial phase of rapid growth, wind energy prices are expected to stabilize, making it more accessible and cost-effective.
According to the report, in the most pessimistic scenario, the wind power market may stagnate or even contract by 2015. By 2020, it could drop to levels seen in 2011. However, with strong international government support, the wind energy market could see substantial growth between 2015 and 2020, leading to a potential installed capacity of 1,600–2,500 GW by 2030. This underscores the critical role of policy and investment in shaping the future of clean energy.
