BYD and Yulin invest in photovoltaic project

On December 22, the Yulin Municipal Government of Shaanxi Province held an investment conference in Beijing at the Beijing International Hotel. During the event, Deputy Mayor Mao Zhongsheng and Yu Zhanfeng, General Manager of BYD Shangluo Area, signed a landmark agreement for a 500MW photovoltaic power station project in Yulin. This initiative marks a significant step forward in Yulin's transition toward clean energy and sustainable development. According to BYD representative Jiang, the project will be implemented in three stages, with the first 200MW expected to be completed by the end of 2013. Once fully operational, the plant will have a total capacity of 500MW, feeding directly into the local grid and generating electricity at a rate of 1 yuan per kWh, supported by national subsidies. The project is anticipated to save 250,000 tons of coal annually, cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 750,000 tons, and produce over 700 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year—without water usage or harmful emissions. The Yulin government expressed deep appreciation for BYD’s contribution to environmental protection. They highlighted that the solar power station represents a clean energy solution that leverages solar resources through ground-mounted photovoltaic systems. It aligns with national green energy policies and supports efforts to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency. The project is expected to enhance Yulin’s energy mix, alleviate power shortages, and support the city’s economic growth while promoting new energy industries. Yulin is well-suited for solar energy due to its vast areas of unused land, including deserts, saline-alkali soils, and abandoned mining areas. The region has abundant solar resources, with annual solar radiation reaching 5,500–6,000 MJ/m². With a potential installed capacity of up to 300GW in desert areas, Yulin is becoming a key player in China’s solar energy sector. BYD continues to lead in new energy innovation, emphasizing technology and long-term sustainability. The company has expanded its solar projects globally, including rooftop installations in Brazil, supplying 110MW PV modules to South Africa, and setting up a 0.75MW system in Japan. These efforts demonstrate BYD’s growing influence in the international renewable energy market. This partnership with Yulin reflects BYD’s broader strategy to promote clean energy worldwide. By collaborating with governments and developers, the company aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and create a cleaner, more sustainable future for generations to come.
