At the end of October this year, two major nuclear power projects were approved and officially reviewed, signaling the official restart of nuclear energy development in China. With strong policy support, several key projects have begun to move forward in the final month of the year. Analysts believe that during the "12th Five-Year Plan" period, the expansion of nuclear power will significantly boost the country’s industrial economy.
On December 27, the second phase of the Tianwan Nuclear Power Plant started pouring concrete for its first reactor vessel, marking the official commencement of construction. The nuclear island of the second phase continues to use the VVER-1000/428 reactors, which were originally designed and built in Russia. However, significant design improvements have been made based on lessons learned from the first phase, aiming to enhance the unit's safety, technological innovation, and economic efficiency. The second phase consists of two units, No. 3 and No. 4, each with a capacity of 1.1 million kilowatts and a construction period of 62 months.
The start of the second phase at Tianwan marks a crucial step in transitioning nuclear power from policy discussions to actual implementation. In addition, since December, two other major nuclear projects have also gained momentum. One is the Fangchenggang Nuclear Power Plant, the first nuclear facility in western China, and the other is the Huaneng Shidao Bay High-Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor Demonstration Project in Shandong, which represents a new generation of nuclear technology.
These developments indicate a renewed focus on nuclear energy as a clean and reliable power source, aligning with China's broader goals for sustainable development and energy security. As more projects get underway, the nuclear industry is expected to play an increasingly important role in the country's energy mix.
