On November 18th, the unveiling ceremony for the newly established subway fire station under the Hangzhou Municipal Public Security Fire Station Bureau took place. This marks a significant milestone as it becomes the first subway fire station in Zhejiang Province. The event was held early in the morning, signaling the beginning of enhanced fire safety measures for Hangzhou’s expanding urban infrastructure.
The Subway Fire Control Branch is strategically located at Niu Chang, Pengjing Town, within the Jianggan District of Hangzhou. With a total land area of approximately 1.07 hectares, the facility includes a green space covering around 0.25 hectares, leaving 0.82 hectares available for construction. The project features an outdoor training ground, complete with a 100-meter training track and a basketball court. The building itself houses both operational and auxiliary spaces, boasting a total floor area of 5,450 square meters. The entire project has a construction cost of 27.27 million yuan.
This Metro Fire Brigade will primarily handle fire safety and emergency response tasks once Hangzhou’s Metro Line 1 begins its operations. The station plans to equip itself with advanced firefighting vehicles, such as compressed air foam trucks, smoke-extraction fire engines, chemical decontamination vehicles, rail-mounted units, heavy-duty foam carriers, and lighting fire trucks. The total estimated expenditure for these specialized vehicles is 38.9 million yuan.
Given the unique challenges posed by the confined and complex environments of subway systems, the firefighting strategies here differ significantly from those used in conventional settings. As explained by the Chief of Staff of the Hangzhou Detachment Team, He Shuhua, “Our detachment benefits from the geographical proximity to the Seventh Fort Group and the specialized training facilities nearby. We are already familiarizing ourselves with underground space exploration techniques and conducting targeted training exercises in advance. These include narrow-space operations, search formations, rapid life-saving access creation, and offensive smoke removal, ensuring we’re fully prepared for any emergencies post-subway commencement.â€
Considering the extensive length of the subway lines, the Metro Fire Fighting Sub-station will adopt a hybrid approach combining firefighting efforts both above and below ground. This regional firefighting model aims to reduce redundant constructions while boosting efficiency. Professional teams will be deployed to ensure swift responses to potential incidents, aiming to arrive within five minutes of receiving an alarm.
Currently, 13 fire stations are operational along Metro Line 1, employing roughly 400 personnel and deploying 75 vehicles. Among them are 14 compressed air foam trucks, 9 medium-sized tank foam carriers, and a Land Rover 60 firefighting robot. Additionally, a set of firefighting motorcycles sourced from Germany's Smiths will assist in subdividing the emergency response process during the operation of Metro Line 1.
As Hangzhou continues to modernize its public transport system, the integration of advanced fire safety measures ensures not only the protection of passengers but also the readiness of emergency services to tackle unforeseen challenges.
