In the bustling timber market of Zhangjiagang, recent price fluctuations have caught the attention of many industry players. The African sandalwood, often referred to as the African red pear, has seen its price soar to 3,800 yuan per cubic meter. This dramatic increase has significantly narrowed the speculative room for traders, particularly those in the Guangdong region. Surprisingly, there’s been a noticeable lack of interest from northern buyers. Meanwhile, the African bean, commonly called African chicken wings, has been reported at 4,800 yuan per cubic meter. African screw wood, or what’s known as African sandalwood, has seen a wide price range, quoted between 4,600 and 5,500 yuan per cubic meter, while some odd lots have been spotted at 2,700 to 2,800 yuan per cubic meter.
On the other hand, Betula alba, or silver birch, continues to remain relatively stable but unremarkable in the current market. Supply remains limited, though there’s hope that the arrival of new shipments from Myanmar might help alleviate this issue. In Guangdong, 2.2 to 2.6-meter-long, 5 cm-thick pieces of Betula alba, classified as A-grade, are currently priced between 5,200 and 5,500 yuan per cubic meter.
This ongoing volatility in the timber market has sparked discussions among traders about future trends. With global demand on the rise and geopolitical factors affecting supply chains, it's becoming increasingly challenging to predict where prices will head next. Some speculate that these price spikes may reflect broader economic shifts, while others believe they could simply be temporary anomalies driven by speculation.
