PITTSBURGH, October 13, 2022—The Carnegie Science Center has once again shone a spotlight on innovation in western Pennsylvania by honoring MECCO and Robert Morris University with a prestigious Carnegie Science Award. Recognized in the Exemplary Educational/Corporate Collaboration category, these two local powerhouses were acknowledged for their remarkable efforts in creating internship and research opportunities for students interested in laser welding.
This groundbreaking partnership began as a way to address the shortage of engineering talent in the region. MECCO, a trailblazer in marking and traceability technologies for over 130 years, has seamlessly integrated real-world problem-solving and innovation into the academic sphere. By opening its application lab doors to Robert Morris University (RMU) students, MECCO has provided invaluable hands-on experience while expanding the capabilities of RMU's Learning Factory.
Under the guidance of RMU Associate Professor of Engineering, Dr. Ben Campbell, the collaboration has yielded impressive results. Two flexible experimental welding platforms were developed and constructed, producing definitive strength data for various welds. The team also explored which types of plastics could be effectively welded, created thermal models to prevent damage, devised process optimization techniques, and even designed a universal test vessel capable of measuring shear and tensile strength as well as verifying hermetic seals. These achievements were made possible thanks to funding from the Manufacturing PA Innovation Program, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
Dr. Campbell highlighted the transformative impact of this collaboration: "Thanks to this ongoing research, MECCO now has better tools to demonstrate welding processes and a deeper understanding of their applications, enabling us to assist customers in addressing new challenges or improving existing solutions." Students involved have expressed immense gratitude for the chance to develop practical skills, engage in meaningful industry research, and contribute to real-world problem-solving.
