In a remarkable celebration of innovation, MECCO and Robert Morris University (RMU) were honored with a prestigious Carnegie Science Award in the category of Exemplary Educational/Corporate Collaboration. This award, presented by the Carnegie Science Center, recognizes their exceptional efforts in fostering internship and research opportunities in the field of laser welding for RMU students. Their collaborative achievements will be highlighted at the inaugural **Geek Out Gala**, taking place on **Thursday, October 13, 2022**.
Each year, the Carnegie Science Awards honor trailblazers in science and technology from Western Pennsylvania, celebrating those who have made significant contributions to the region's economy and society. Over the past 26 years, more than 600 innovators have received this distinguished recognition. This year, MECCO and RMU join the ranks of other esteemed recipients, standing out for their groundbreaking work in educational and corporate partnerships.
Jason Brown, the Henry Buhl, Jr., Director of the Carnegie Science Center, emphasized the importance of these awards: "The Carnegie Science Awards not only celebrate the region's brightest minds but also provide a platform for them to share their inspiring journeys." The collaboration between MECCO and RMU began as a response to address the shortage of engineering talent in the area. As a pioneer in marking and traceability technologies for over 130 years, MECCO has introduced real-world problem-solving and innovation directly into RMU classrooms. Through this partnership, MECCO has opened its application labs to RMU students, enabling them to engage in meaningful research and internships. Additionally, this collaboration has significantly expanded the capabilities of RMU’s Learning Factory.
Under the leadership of RMU Associate Professor of Engineering, Dr. Ben Campbell, the partnership has yielded impressive results. Together, they have developed two flexible experimental welding platforms, established definitive strength data for various welds, explored the potential of different plastics for welding, created thermal models to prevent damage thresholds, optimized welding processes, and designed a universal test vessel to assess shear and tensile strength as well as hermetic seals. These advancements were made possible thanks to funding from the Manufacturing PA Innovation Program, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
Dr. Campbell expressed his excitement about the collaboration: "This ongoing research has equipped MECCO with invaluable tools to demonstrate welding processes and deepen our understanding of their applications. For our students, this experience has been invaluable, allowing them to develop new skills, engage in industry-focused research, and learn how to tackle customer-driven challenges."
