Over the past few years, with the rapid progress of building Hainan into an international tourism island, the province has witnessed a significant rise in energy demands. During the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, this trend is expected to persist, intensifying the conflict between conventional energy supply and the needs of economic growth. To address this challenge, Hainan plans to leverage its abundant natural resources to promote the development of renewable energy projects in the coming years.
Throughout the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan," Hainan anticipates a yearly 14% growth in total social electricity consumption, reaching approximately 30 billion kWh by 2015. However, this rapid expansion has led to an estimated power deficit of 1.4 million kilowatts between 2013 and 2014. To bridge this gap, the province intends to capitalize on its rich green resources like wind and solar power, accelerating the adoption of renewable energy solutions to alleviate the pressure on its energy supply.
Currently, Hainan has made strides in clean energy development, constructing several photovoltaic power generation demonstration projects. These include the Hainan Eco-Software Park’s PV building integration initiative and the "China Aviation Special Glass 0.85MW PV Building Integration Demonstration Project." Moving forward, Hainan aims to designate areas like the Haikou Hi-Tech Development Zone, the Old City Economic Development Zone, and the Yangpu Development Zone as "400MW Distributed Photovoltaic Power Demonstration Zones" to the National Energy Administration. This effort is part of a broader strategy to raise the share of energy in primary energy consumption from the current 30.6% to 57.6%.
Beyond these efforts, Hainan is exploring additional opportunities to enhance its renewable energy capacity. By embracing sustainable practices and fostering innovation in energy technologies, the province hopes not only to meet its growing energy needs but also to set a precedent for environmentally responsible development. As the world shifts toward greener alternatives, Hainan’s commitment to renewable energy marks a pivotal step toward a more sustainable future.
