As the construction of Hainan International Tourism Island progresses, the island’s energy consumption demand is expected to grow significantly during the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period. This surge in demand has highlighted the growing tension between traditional energy sources and sustainable economic growth. To address this challenge, Hainan is set to leverage its abundant natural resources to develop renewable energy projects over the coming years.
Over the course of the "12th Five-Year Plan," Hainan’s total social electricity consumption is projected to rise by approximately 14% annually, reaching an estimated 30 billion kWh by 2015. During 2013-2014, the province anticipates a power shortfall of around 1.4 million kilowatts. To bridge this gap, Hainan plans to tap into its vast renewable resources, including wind and solar energy, to bolster its energy infrastructure and ensure a more stable supply.
Currently, Hainan boasts several pioneering clean energy initiatives, such as the demonstration project for integrated photovoltaic buildings at Hainan Eco-Software Park and the "China Aviation Special Glass 0.85MW Integrated Photovoltaic Building Demonstration Project." These projects represent just the beginning of Hainan's commitment to renewable energy. The provincial government also intends to designate areas like the Haikou Hi-Tech Development Zone, the Old City Economic Development Zone, and the Yangpu Development Zone as part of a "400MW Distributed Photovoltaic Power Demonstration Zone" to be submitted to the National Energy Administration. This move aims to boost the proportion of renewable energy in primary energy consumption from the current 30.6% to 57.6% within the next few years.
Hainan’s efforts in this area not only aim to meet immediate energy demands but also to establish itself as a leader in sustainable development. By embracing renewable energy solutions, the island hopes to balance rapid tourism growth with environmental protection, creating a model for other regions to follow. As the world continues to shift toward greener alternatives, Hainan stands ready to play its part in this global transition.
